On the whole the Eskimos are a coastal people. Their total number is not more than 35000. Of course about 14500 live along the coast of Greenland. Eskimo settlements are scattered along the northern coast of North America from Labrador to Alaska’s panhandle (“锅柄状”地区). On Baffin Island and on other large islands there are Eskimo villages. The Eskimos spend most of their time near the sea and get much of their living from the sea. However, one tribe, the Caribou Eskimos, live inland west of Hudson Bay. Some of them have never seen the sea.

Although life in one village is in many ways very much like life in another, there are some differences. The reason is that the Eskimos must use what they find in the particular district where they live. The Copper Eskimos who live beside Coronation Gulf build thick-walled winter houses of snow blocks. Alaskan Eskimos do not use such houses and most of them have never even seen one. Their winter homes are made of turf and mud. The Eskimos of southern Greenland are expert in handling a kayak, or Eskimo canoe. They fish in the open water of the sea. The Eskimos of northern Greenland have little chance to use kayaks because the water along the coast is frozen almost all the year. All tribes, however, have one thing in common. They are primarily fishermen and hunters.
